Spotify is best known for being a loved music streaming app across the globe but is also widely debated online for its ‘premium vs free’ set of features. While free users do enjoy the bulk of what the platform has to offer, there are multiple benefits they can’t make the most of.
Some of these include an ad-free experience, high-quality sound and or even shuffling songs. However, Spotify has now announced its decision to revoke the paywall on one of its popular features, much to the delight of its free users.
Spotify makes lyrics free again: What’s there to know?
The feature, which was initially available for everyone, was put behind a paywall and only allowed premium users access to it. Anyone with a free tier could only access up to three song lyrics per month. However, the brand, in conversation with Engadget, mentioned how it plans to extend song lyrics to everyone again, ensuring more people enjoy it globally.
While several believe this decision was made based on negative feedback from its users, the company has neither accepted nor denied the claim. That said, several have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their displeasure regarding the platform’s initial decision.
What is Spotify’s song lyrics feature and how does it work?
Spotify’s song lyrics feature allows users to view time-synced lyrics while they stream a song. It was incorporated for users to enjoy the words of the song or sing along as the song played. Spotify smartphone app users also had the option of selecting a portion of the lyrics and sharing them as quotes, with interactive backgrounds, across their social media platforms.
However, it was only in late September 2023 that it was noticed how the feature had gradually begun to restrict free users from viewing not more than three song lyrics a month.
The music streaming app also states that there will still be a limit to the number of song lyrics a free user can view, but it will be ‘nearly impossible’ to reach it. That said, the company hasn’t revealed this number to the public.
The feature is slowly being rolled out to a larger audience and Spotify also goes on to hint about ‘further additional improvements’ which will be integrated into the free experience in the near future.
