Instagram Chief Flags Coming Changes to Profile Grid Displays

This could lead to a major change in how you approach your Instagram posting strategy. smm panel nigeriya

Instagram is currently experimenting with a new vertical grid layout on user profiles, replacing the standard square thumbnails with taller, in-stream images, as you might have noticed in the app.

As shown in this example shared by digital marketing expert Lindsey Gamble, some Instagram profiles have already adopted this new profile grid format, which is more suited for video content, particularly Reels.

Essentially, it mirrors the Reels grid but applies it to the main feed, meaning all your posts will soon be adjusted to fit this layout.

According to Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri in his latest Q&A video, this change, or something similar, is expected to roll out to all users in the near future.

As per Mosseri:

“We’re actually testing a vertical grid, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, for your profile, instead of squares. Now, squares are from way back in the day when you could only upload square photos to Instagram. And I know this can be annoying for some of you who really spend a lot of time curating and making sure everything lines up, but I would really like to do better by the content [creators of] today. And the vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical; it’s either 4:3 in a photo or 9:16 in a video, and cropping it down to a square is pretty brutal, so I’m hoping we can figure out a way to manage this transition.”

The update is logical, as Mosseri points out, but it could fundamentally alter how you present your Instagram profile and capture attention with your content.

While the change might seem minor—simply making your images rectangular and giving each panel more space—the impact on perception could be significant. It may also raise user expectations for video content, as these longer images resemble video thumbnails, in line with how the platform has traditionally been used.

This is something to keep an eye on, as Instagram is clearly moving towards re-aligning its platform around video content to match changing user behaviors.

So, be prepared for adjustments and new strategies in your posting approach as a result.
