Instagram is changing its primary metric for evaluating content performance to the number of views.

Starting from the coming weeks, Instagram will use the number of views as the primary metric for assessing content performance.

Instagram will soon make “views” its primary metric for assessing content performance, allowing creators to track this metric across Reels, Stories, photos, and more. According to a post by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, this change will be implemented in the coming weeks.

In his post, Mosseri explains, “Previously, we had different metrics for evaluating Reels versus other posts, but we want to evolve this to make it easier to understand your content regardless of the format.

” He adds, “Total views differ from Reach on a post because a user can see a particular piece of content multiple times.”

While views will be Instagram’s new main metric, Mosseri advises content creators to also consider the number of times a post is seen per user who views it for the first time. He notes,

“Both are likely the most important metrics for anyone looking to understand how their content is performing on Instagram.”

Meta has also made views an important metric on Threads; early in 2024, the company introduced the ability to click on Threads posts to see their total view count. On the other hand, since Elon Musk took control of Twitter (now known as X), there has been an increased focus on view counts as well.
