Publishers have blocked the OAI-SearchBot tool, which collects information for SearchGPT from OpenAI.
About a week after the introduction of the AI-based search engine SearchGPT by OpenAI, some of the largest news publishers have announced that they have blocked this search engine.
According to a report by Insider, The New York Times and at least 13 other news sites have blocked the data extraction tool OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI uses this tool to show SearchGPT users the desired results, so The New York Times and other publications do not appear in this search engine’s results.
Other publications on this list include Wired and The New Yorker.

OpenAI’s Claims Regarding the SearchGPT Search Engine
When introducing SearchGPT, OpenAI emphasized that the OAI-SearchBot is not used to collect data for training its AI models, such as GPT-5. They also advised website owners to provide the necessary access for this tool to “ensure that they appear in the search results.”
Nevertheless, the AI-powered search engine SearchGPT, which has been introduced as a serious competitor to Google, will have a significant disadvantage compared to its rival without access to its data collection tool for these websites.
OpenAI also has another content collection tool called GPTbot, which gathers data from the internet to train its AI models. Hundreds of websites have blocked this tool as well. However, some publications, such as Time magazine and The Wall Street Journal, have entered into commercial agreements with OpenAI regarding the use of this tool.
It is likely that the ChatGPT startup will need to sign new agreements for its new product, SearchGPT, or make modifications to its existing contracts with these publications.
